DANGEROUS CORNER
Murder, adultery, drug addiction and closet homosexuality, it could be a story from modern fiction, but it’s not, this is a 1932 play called Dangerous Corner.
The action opens on an Art Deco set of a dinner party. The main characters are bound by business and family and seem happily successful – but a chance remark leads to a twisting tale of deceit, unrequited love and violence and eventually to an exploration of the value of truth.
This is a faithful recreation of a classic text. The acting is mannered and precise, the sets beautifully apt and the production professional and crisp.
Elizabeth MacGregor as Olwen and Elinor Portch as Freda star with a solid supporting ensemble that exudes charm.
The period dialogue and structure is challenging for a modern audience, but authentic design values and high-quality characterisations prove that the concerns of the 1930s are still relevant today. (LR)
