Cruelty Free Festival 2008

By Jackie McMillan

Sunday 2 November – Belmore Park, Haymarket

The main reason to step on down to the 2008 Cruelty Free Festival is of course to find out ways that you can save the animals. They’ve got tons of ideas, which will be presented to you at nearly sixty stalls. I’m told you’ll be able to sponsor a baby orangutan, adopt a homeless dog, discover which companies test on animals, volunteer with an animal rescue group or try some delicious vegan food. Speaking of vegan food, who better to show it off than hip celebrity chef Suzy Spoon’ She’ll be there running cooking demonstrations; as will Sydney chef Leigh Drew who will be launching her new cookbook on the day.

There will be also be lots of ways to wind down too, including guided meditation lead by the Sydney Buddhist Centre and open air yoga. If you stuff yourself stupid (or over-indulge at their licensed bar), why not wind down by lying on the grass watching live entertainment on the two stages’ The acts on stage include local bands The Black Stars and The Heartbreak Club; Queenslanders Rachael Brady and Sonic Porno and Victorian performer, Rosie Burgess. Blackie from iconic Australian band The Hard-Ons will be performing an acoustic set and the special guest host for the day is “The Doctor” from Triple J TV and the Triple J morning crew. Children are very welcome, and there will be activities that cater to them too. So mark down Sunday 2nd November, 2008 into your diary, and check out their website for more detailed information: www.crueltyfreefestival.org.au
