Create Your Own Duck Cake In Sydney’s Own Pop-Up Bluey Café
A pop-up café inspired by the iconic Bluey Duck Cake episode is launching in Sydney this weekend, bringing two legendary pieces of Australian media to life.
The Bluey Duck Cake Cafe is set to open its doors at Westfield Bondi this weekend, with families being given the chance to step inside the Heeler family kitchen and Bluey’s backyard. Café-goers will get to decorate their very own ‘Duckling’ cupcake- a mini version of the beloved duck cake- and if they’re really lucky, they’ll also have the chance to meet Bluey herself.
The legendary creation that features in the season 2 episode first appeared in The Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book 45 years ago, a cookbook that’s become a staple in the households of Australian families.
80-year-old Sydneysider Agnes Lee invented the masterpiece in 1979 when she got a job in the Australian Women’s Weekly Test Kitchen team, only two weeks after moving to Australia from Hong Kong.
Lee is also the mastermind behind several of the other cakes, including the rocket, and the train that graces the book’s cover.
“When I first created this cake for The Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book, I never imagined it would one day be featured in Bluey and rediscovered by a whole new generation of families around the world,” she said.
“It’s incredibly special to see how the show has brought new life to the cake, and to see the Bluey Duck Cake Cafe celebrate it in such a fun and creative way, for kids, parents, and grandparents alike.”
Beloved Australian tradition brought around the world
First airing in 2020, the Duck Cake episode sees Bluey and Bingo’s dad Bandit follow in the footsteps of thousands of Australian parents when he makes a stressful attempt to create the iconic cake. When he drops the duck’s head on the kitchen floor, he’s forced to make do and, on Bluey’s suggestion, creates a new head out of the duck’s neck, presenting the lopsided cake to Bingo to her great delight.
After years of being loved in Australia, the episode brought the Duck Cake to families around the world, capturing the imaginations, hearts, and sweet tooths across generations and continents.
“Bluey is all about those memory-making family moments and the duck cake is pure Aussie nostalgia,” said the voice of Bandit, David McCormack. “It’s awesome to see something from the show leap off the screen and into real life for the kiddos (and big kids) to enjoy!”
The Blue Duck Cafe will be open on Saturday 11 October & Sunday 12 October between 10am – 2.45pm at Westfield Bondi. Entry is free, but spots are limited. Enter the ballot for tickets here.
