Randwick Council proposes transformation of Maroubra Street into public plaza

Randwick council has announced plans to transform McKeon Street Maroubra into a pedestrian friendly plaza to “increase the amount of space available to the public and improve access to local businesses”.

Beginning September this year, McKeon Street will be temporarily converted and redesigned into a public space for a 6 month trial on the viability of the project.  The decision from Randwick Council came with $500,000 grant funding from the NSW Government’s Streets as Shared Spaces program.

Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker said that this project is unique “because it’s a beach side location, and when we add in activations such as pop-up music performance, street furniture and public art, areas like this can enlighten a community’s character.”

“We’re hopeful that this will turn out to be a massive success.”

Council doesn’t ‘anticipate’ increase of traffic with road closures 

The council notes that traffic between Marine Parade and Fenton Avenue will be closed during the 6 month trial, however Randwick Council said to City Hub that “we don’t anticipate the closure will increase traffic in the area”.

In mitigating potential traffic issues, Randwick council said “the council is looking into possibly creating additional parking in Fenton Ave to make up for the spaces lost on McKeon St”.

Members of the public are invited to a ‘Chat with Us’ feedback session held by Randwick Council on Wednesday June 15 and Saturday June 18, to meet the project team and share thoughts.
