Coral trees poisoned

More than 10 Coral trees in Bronte Gully have been poisoned. Waverley Mayor Ingrid Strewe said she was shocked at the latest spate of tree vandalism.
‘Our staff discovered 10 to 12 Coral trees have been ring-barked. It seems that someone has also applied Roundup,’ she said.
‘This is outrageous. Coral trees may not be the perfect tree for the area and some people do not like non-indigenous trees, but Corals play a big role in feeding lorikeets while we are waiting for the natives we plant to grow.’
The Bronte Gully Bushcare group is slowly working its way up the gully and they formally request, from council, the removal of one or two Corals every couple of years.
‘We do not need any uncalled for assistance from someone with a sharp knife and a bottle of poison. It is a really selfish and really stupid act of fundamentalism. Our staff have washed off the poison and will tend to them in the hope they survive,’ the mayor said.
If these trees do not survive, twice as many trees will replace them, Cr Strewe said, urging anyone who witnessed this tree vandalism to report it to the council.
