Randwick council has announced that construction on the revitalisation of the Meek Street Plaza in Kingsford has begun. The plaza, which was first transformed into a public space in 2016, will undergo a transformation including upgrades to streetscaping and landscaping, and a new underground car park.

Also included in the space will be outdoor furniture and a new stage for community performances.

Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker visited the construction site to kick off the project.

“The plaza will bring colour, movement and vibrancy to the heart of Kingsford” Cr Parker said.

“There will be new landscaping to provide additional shade, seating areas, a grassed space and room for local musicians and performers to entertain.” The Mayor also commended the work of several Randwick councillors and one former councillor “who made sure the community’s views were heard”.

Community consultation on the project revealed important factors for residents included more green spaces, seating areas and local markets. Commenters in the ‘Have your say’ consultation welcomed the new space, with one resident noting that “there’s no hang out place in Kingsford”.

Randwick Council has allocated $1.5 million to the design and construction of the upgraded plaza. Expected completion of the space is autumn of 2023.

Council has said that parking on Meek Street between Middle Lane and Harbourne Road will be affected during construction.

“I’m so pleased that Council can provide this beautiful space for our community,” Cr Parker said.
