Colourful moments in Bondi

By Reuben Brand

Colourful Moments, the latest group exhibition at Art Moment Gallery, boasts an impressive line-up of artists.

Yalyu Avonakech, a Sydney-based artist of Russian descent, uses only natural materials such as leaves, flowers, seashells or bark in her work.

Les Brown is a local Merimbula artist who has been involved in many global issues, including the infamous washing machine sculpture cyclone eternity.

Samantha Goode’s photographs depict her life in England and her transition to Australia in late 2007. She is drawn to rich vibrant colours, whether it be a sunset or a colourful harbour.

As a trained geologist, Sue Hanson was fascinated by the colours, and patterns that appeared under the microscope when a rock was reduced to its smallest constituents. She tragically died from a sudden brain aneurysm, and Hanson’s family is now sharing these unique photos as a tribute to Hanson and her work.

Jamie Henshall was inspired by a trip to Rajasthan, India: “My objective with each piece was to enable the observer to feel that they too have experienced the burnt orange of the Jailsalmer sunset or have meandered dreamily through the hustle and bustle of the Puskar markets.”

Leni Kae, artist and colour therapist, uses her work to prompt neurological responses and presents a unique look at how colour influences the body and mind: ‘Colour is more than just aesthetics; as part of the visible electromagnetic spectrum it has the power to trigger hormone release and subconscious memory.’

Helene Leane is a printmaker based in Newcastle, and is currently exhibiting still life monotypes derived from a gelatin plate.

Sej is based on Macleay Island, Queensland, and works on large scale multi-panel abstract pieces. She has exhibited in Brisbane, Melbourne and Switzerland, and is now working on a series for her up-coming exhibition in New York.

Waverley mayor Ingrid Strewe opened Colourful Moments at Art Moment Gallery, 99 Curlewis St, Bondi Beach at 7 pm on September 4.
