Chinese student still missing in Bondi

After disappearing for more than four weeks, it is now assumed an 18-year-old Chinese student has drowned.

Xing Chaojin was reported missing at Ben Buckler Point in late May. Xing, from South China’s Guangdong Province, was a student at the Academy of Information Technology in Sydney, majoring in print design.

“Helicopters and boats were sent out twice last week searching. But nothing has been found,” said Officer Matthew Veraguth of Bondi Police Station who was in charge of investigating the case.

According to police, a passerby noticed a backpack and a pair of shoes on rocks close to the water’s edge near a cliff at Ben Buckler Point on May 28. He told police he thought someone left them there and was nearby. But when on June 2, he noticed they were still there, he called the police.

“We found his passport and wallet in his bag. There is no trace of fight or any violent actions at the spot,” Officer Veraguth said. “We do not believe the man’s disappearance is suspicious because his money as well as his credit card was still in the wallet.”

CCTV footage shot at Bondi Junction Station shows that Xing arrived at the station at 1:16 pm on May 25 and got on a bus to Bondi beach. The investigation continues.

Xing’s parents arrived in Sydney on June 10 after receiving a phone call from Australian police.
