Iconic Sydney institution Chinese Noodle House has announced their closure for the end of 2025.

In an Instagram post last week, the Chinatown restaurant published a letter to customers, thanking them for their patronage over the years and breaking the sad news.

“Due to the landlord’s unilateral decision not to renew our lease, we are sadly forced to leave,” the post read. “It has been our honor and pleasure to serve you, and we are deeply grateful for your companionship along the way.”

The restaurant will cease slinging noodles in December 2025, but there may be hope on the horizon, with the owners seemingly determined to open another restaurant soon.

“Thank you for your support and love,” they wrote. “We will definitely serve you again in our new location.”

Patrons willing to put it all on the line: “send us the landlord’s info”

If the internet’s reaction is anything to go by, Sydney-siders are pretty devastated.

“If the world is against Chinese Noodle House, then I am against the world,” read one comment on the post, while another dedicated fan said, “Landlords suck but Chinese Noodle House will be loved forever”.

Makeup artist and content creator dom.skii put it succinctly in a teary video, saying, “it’s honestly seen me at like, so many different low points in my life, and the beef noodle soups have saved my life numerous times.. life would be better even if it was for thirty minutes.”

Opening in the early 90’s, Chinese Noodle House was one of the city’s first Northern-style Chinese restaurants, and has made a name for itself with its hand-cut noodles and braised eggplant, a line often snaking its way down the street at lunchtimes.
