Canvassing the landscape

Landscape Moments, the new group show at Art Moment Gallery this month, brings together the richly varied techniques of seven artists.

Rita Williams, art collector and Sydney Morning Herald sub-editor, will open the exhibition on October 7.

Hayley Ablott says that through her use of night photography, landscapes manifest an ethereal dreamlike state. ‘It is that which we cannot see that we fail to appreciate. Without the observer, the landscape ceases to be,’ she said.

Marika Varady, a professional artist for 22 years, has exhibited in more than 60 shows in Australia and abroad, including 10 solo exhibitions. Varady mixes raw pigments and oil-based mediums to create her own unique paints with which she constructs complex, ambiguous worlds somewhere between reality and abstraction.

Tim Gratton’s Billabong Creek series is the result of a trip to Boonoke, a sheep station in south western NSW. In his Sydney studio, Gratton transformed his sketches into the collection of paintings now on exhibition.
‘Using acrylics in a general manner allowed me to paint swiftly, creating the energy of the moment I experienced while sitting at the creek,’ he said.

Kim Hun-Hee is a professor in fine arts at Suwon University, South Korea. Hun-Hee takes her inspiration from clouds and paints them using black and white ink on Hanji, traditional Korean paper.

Andrew Basso depicts the relationship of sky, sun and earth by using enamel-based paint on old recycled frames, infusing the ideas of identity, change and spirituality within each piece.

Carol Neville, a science teacher and researcher, infuses her work with the mysteries of nature. Her art reflects her desire to understand how the world works and the importance of observation is art and science.

Inna Moshkovich revels in the energy of Sydney’s landscapes, from the vigorous vitality of Sydney’s CBD to the tranquility of early morning walks on Bondi Beach.

Landscape Moments opens at 7pm on October 7 at Art Moment Gallery, 99 Curlewis St. Bondi Beach.
