Call for Leichhardt youth mentors

Leichhardt Council has put out a call for volunteers to contribute to its youth mentoring program. The program aims to help mentor local high school students who are at risk of dropping out.

Labor Councillor and former Glebe Youth Service Manager Darcy Byrne said the community had too many children dropping out of school, even prior to completing their School Certificate. “I am calling on all local people who have a little time and energy to spare, to sign up to become a youth mentor,” he said. “In my previous role as a youth service manager I have seen first-hand how young people’s lives can be transformed when the community comes together to support them.”

Residents who register as youth mentors will receive training and attain a TAFE qualification in community mentoring. Applications for youth mentoring postions are open until February 2011. For more information, visit http://www.leichhardt.nsw.gov.au/Youth-Services.html
