Byrne says rubbish dumping must stop

Marrickville Mayor and Greens candidate for the state seat of Marrickville, Fiona Byrne, has called for a halt to the dumping of rubbish at a large Marrickville public housing complex.

Cr Byrne said she had come across the problem doorknocking residents in the block. A group of them showed her a giant skip which served as the rubbish bin for 12 units in the complex – but was also, by virtue of being large, unfenced and near a main road, a magnet for illegal waste dumping.

Cr Byrne said the situation she encountered was unacceptable and needed to be rectified quickly.

“I had a look in the skip and there seemed to be old motorcycle parts dumped in there, amongst other things,” she said.

“Residents told me the smell in summer is overpowering and it is attracting rats. They are keeping their doors and windows closed because of the smell.

“Public housing estates should not be a target for illegal dumping. Because of the constant dumping, the waste contractors are emptying the giant skip three times a week, which is a waste of public money.”

She called on Housing NSW to replace the skip with normal smaller bins, fenced behind a gate.

The Independent contacted Housing NSW for a response. They indicated they were aware of the issue but failed to answer a series of written questions before deadline.
