Briefs: Dirty Laundry – REVIEW
Those cheeky, clever boyz from Briefs Factory are airing their soiled smalls again in Dirty Laundry. This time, they’ve brought a hamper full of fab acts to the wonderful Sydney Spiegeltent.
Dirty Laundry is an oxi-action, super-concentrated cabaret/circus/boylesque/drag/comedy revue featuring eight hard-working, talented, personality-endowed performers who all come out in the wash.
The intimate, relaxed vibe of Sydney Spiegeltent makes it the perfect venue for the Briefs crew, who like to encourage audience engagement. And the in-theatre bar certainly helps as well.
Ring-leader/den-mother Shivanana, is magnificent and imposing and knows how to hold court. Her MC moments are hilarious.
The whole show, if you haven’t guessed, is built around a laundry theme, with two shiny white front-loaders (washing machines, that is) on stage, lots of polystyrene and glycerine bubbles, and very few clothes actually being worn.
In between the frivolity are some incredible performances including some impressive spinning and stripping on a Cyr wheel (like a giant hula hoop); neon hula hoop twirling; extraordinary acrobatics routine featuring full somersaults from a standing start; poetic aerial ring routine; aerial straps that climaxes with a wrap in plastic wrap; and lots more.
The Briefs troupe clearly enjoy working together; they have a great rapport and precision timing.
This is not a show for those with sensitive skin, but if you enjoy being put through the wringer with your entertainment then come and soak up the fun.
