BRETHREN JUST BELOW STUDIOS
In an old molasses factory, beneath the infamous Big Jesus Burger (BJB) recording studio, a new creative haven is growing. Artist Kevina-Jo Smith had long been searching for a ‘home’ for the ‘creatively homeless’ of Sydney, and in January this year, the move in finally began.
Brethren Just Below, named according to the ‘BJB’ acronym as an ode to the recording studio upstairs, consists of eight work spaces, connected by a small foyer and a hallway filled with primordial-looking plants. There are 20 residents including the art collective Greedyhen, jewellery designer Elke Kramer, and the wildly talented drummer of Midnight Juggernauts, Daniel Stricker.
A ninth, communal studio functions as an additional project or event space for all residents, and is also available for hire. Future plans for this space include market days, exhibitions, record listening parties and film screenings, but it needs refurbishment. In order to raise funds, Brethren Just Below will be opening its doors to the public for the first time this weekend. Live entertainment, drinks, appetisers and raffle prizes are all part of the ticket price, while more extravagant items will be up for auction.
