Bondi’s idol in with a chance

Bondi-based musician, Wes Carr, 26, is singing his way to success on reality television show Australian Idol.

Much to his surprise, Carr initially made his way into the Top 12 of the singing competition, and currently sits in the top nine.

‘I just wasn’t expecting to get through when I auditioned. I had this doubt in my mind for some reason,’ he said.

Carr is a $3.25 favourite with betting agency Lasseters Sportsbook to be crowned the 2008 Australian Idol. The multi-talented musician, who plays the piano, guitar and harmonica, said he’s taking all the attention in his stride.

‘It really is quite a shock to me because I’m among some amazing musicians in the competition this year,’ Carr said.

Although he admits to not being much of a gambler, Carr said he’d put his money on Chrislyn Hamilton, 17, to win the competition.

Making it into the Top 12 on Australian Idol isn’t Carr’s first taste of musical success. A few years ago he toured with the band Tambalane, which also included silverchair drummer Ben Gillies.

But Carr said being on the reality television show is a completely different experience.

‘When you’re on Australian Idol it’s high pressure all of the time as you’re under the microscope of judging panels and people at home are listening intently and judging what you’re wearing, what you look like, your personality and everything else,’ he said.

Carr describes his musical style as eclectic, acoustic rock with a bit of a vintage twist and said he’s more ready than ever before to be exposed to a national audience.

‘I’d like to have two albums released within five years, that’s always been a dream of mine; to release, write and record while touring and playing music,’ he said.

Each week, members of the Top 12 perform a new song in a chosen category ‘ from pop to rock to swing ‘ and the contestant with the least number of public votes is eliminated.

Ultimately, the crowned Australian Idol will receive a record deal and an almost guaranteed smash hit, right out of the gate.
