Bondi veteran lifesavers honoured

Fifteen lifesavers who devoted 50 or more years as volunteers were presented recently with Surf Life Saving Australia long-service awards at Bondi Surf Bathers Life Saving Club’s annual Veterans Day function.

Recipients of the awards were:

Fifty years service: John Douglass, Rod Francis,  Lloyd Greenwood, Len Harris, John Kinnear, Richard Rose, Peter Stapleton and Bob Reid.

Sixty years service: John Campbell, Michael Coleman, Bill Deverall, Peter McCarthy  and Dudley Mills.

Seventy years service: Peter McIntyre and Allan Morcombe.

The function brought together many teams of lifesavers who had not assembled as a group for almost 40 years. One example was the get together of Leigh Emery, Bob Leach, Graham Sellers, Ted Baldock and Larry Brook, members of the 1967-68 Australian champion junior six-person rescue and resuscitation team.

Former rugby league international player John “Bomber” Peard continued to show tremendous courage despite the effects of a severe stroke some years ago, entertaining the large gathering with a hilarious skit that embarrassed some of his fellow long-service club members.
