The final 210 metre-section of a cycleway in Bondi Junction has now been finished, linking Oxford Street, Syd Enfield Drive and Bondi Road to Centennial Park.

The section of cycleway is now operational and will ease traffic congestion and go towards reducing CO2 emissions to help carry out the community’s greenhouse emission target of net zero by 2035.

The new section of cycleway highlights Waverley Council’s goal to improve the Bondi Junction CBD area and its infrastructure in an effort to improve the quality of life, attract more visitors and bring in more residents.

Mayor of Waverley Paula Masselos said she was delighted that the project would allow “people of all ages and abilities, including families, to hop on a bike and travel safely to their chosen destination”.

“It also means fewer cars are on the road as people hop on their bikes instead of jumping into their cars,” she said.

Member for Coogee Dr Marjorie O’Neill stated that this was a step in the right direction to reduce traffic congestion.

“If just 5% of all car trips under 5km were shifted to walking or riding, speeds on our roads would increase by 50%”.

The official opening of the cycleway will take place on Thursday March 9 from 7am to 9am on the corner of St James Road and Oxford Street, however the cycleway is already operational and ready for use.

The NSW Government funded the completion of this project to stimulate the local economy. An estimated 7,500 weekly trips have already been made on the completed cycleway through Bondi.
