Bondi in poem

Bondi in poem

Three of Australia’s leading poets will explore Bondi Beach through poetry on Saturday, October 10 at Bondi Line, a free event being held at Bondi Social Club.

Joanne Burns, Brook Emery and Les Wicks all have connections with the Bondi area and all are accomplished poets with a number of collections published between them.

Emery is also the winner of many awards including the Newcastle Poetry Prize, the Bruce Dawe National Poetry Prize, the Max Harris Award and the Australian Sports Poetry Award.

The poets will be joined by guitarist and composer Mary-Jane Leahy. Leahy’s guitar pieces are written as a reflection of her experience and for people who have had a great impact on her life.

Her recent collaboration with local Greens councillor Dominic Wy Kanak has given her greater insight into the relationship between Indigenous and non-indigenous Australians

There will also be an open mic session, where audience members can read their poems celebrating Bondi.

Prizes will be awarded for the best poems with the winner to be published in Guide to Sydney Beaches, a poetry outreach program run by Les Wicks.

Bondi Line, 2:30pm, Saturday, October 10, 1st Floor Bondi Social Club, 38 Campbell St, Bondi Beach.
