Bondi Beach hits the airwaves

Broadcasting from their unassuming studio at North Bondi Golf and Diggers Club, Bondi Beach Radio enjoys a panoramic view of Sydney’s iconic beach from behind a collection of DJ decks and microphones.

It is from this iconic location that the station’s various DJs churn out a mix of programs that strive to encapsulate Bondi’s unique arts, culture and music scene.

Nathalie Duthil, General Manager of Bondi Beach Radio, said the station uses its mobile rig to broadcast live from gigs and events in and around Bondi Beach.

“We do a lot of pop-up broadcasting so if there’s any events or any gigs, we basically rock up, plug in and start broadcasting. People can tune in from anywhere in the world and listen to what’s happening,” she said.

The station, which has been up and running since April, features everything from travel and sports programs to segments devoted exclusively to house and Latin music.

Ms Duthil said the station is committed to showcasing and fostering local talent, aiming to enhance the Bondi Beach experience.

“We’re focusing on the Bondi culture and showing the diversity and what’s happening in Bondi. It’s about offering a platform to people so that they can showcase their talents and give radio a go,” she said.

“It’s all about the community. Our slogan is ‘by the DJs, for the people’.”

Currently operating online, the station hopes to secure a broadcast licence in the near future. “We’re planning to go broadcast. That’s our aim for about a year’s time to apply for a community broadcasting licence,” said Ms Duthil.

The station hopes to strike up partnerships with community groups and has set its sights on becoming the first official community radio station in Bondi.

“We basically want to become like the voice of Bondi. That’s our aim – that and to become a creative platform for everyone,” said Ms Duthil.

Waverley Mayor Sally Betts welcomed the new addition to the Bondi radio scene and noted that she would be happy to work with the station. “We’re very happy to work with anyone supporting the community,” she said.
