BIG SCARY – VACATION

BIG SCARY – VACATION

Vacation is the latest release from Melbourne two piece Big Scary and although it’s the first album by the group, it comes after the release of a series of EPs that were compiled to become the LP The Big Scary Four Seasons. Don’t be fooled though as they don’t live up to their name. Instead they write soulful indie-folk numbers that catch you from the get go and although they wear their influences on their sleeve there is not a moment where the band sounds contrived. The LP begins with the melancholy Gladiator and the attraction is immediate, the voice of singer Tom Lansek rides big jangling guitars and as the song progresses his voice interchanges with the pretty voice of drummer Jo Syme. Their voices suit each other beautifully and this is demonstrated none better than on the album closer Rolling By. The track Purple is a bumping rock n roll number reminiscent of Franz Ferdinand while Child In The Tree reminds the listener of The Beatles, Jeff Buckley and Pink Floyd all at once. Vacation takes the listener on a journey and great care was taken in crafting the songs. By the sound of things they’re really hitting their stride.
