BEST PUBLIC MONUMENT

HENRY LAWSON
Hidden away beneath the shade of white gums, this effigy of Australia’s pioneering bush poet delights those who chance upon it. The statue is set on raised sandstone and cast in bronze. It is a triple figure of the man himself with a friendly dog sitting to one side of him and an old bushy on the other. The superbly conceived tribute uses complex imagery to evoke Lawson’s affable nature and his battle with alcoholism and depression. Lawson’s monument shows how his life and times are relevant to contemporary Australia and is a must see in Sydney. (LC)
