Best New Books: Ariel Books
Ariel Books is a ‘chic nerd’s paradise’: it has everything highbrow about literature with a mix of pop art, audio books and boutique stationary thrown in. Besides the fantastic collection of fiction and philosophy, art books abound, as well as sketch gear, 1970’s Czech fountain pens and all things guaranteed to transform even the dullest wannabe writer into Simone de Beauvoir. Whole sections are devoted to design, typography and “tattoo and gothic culture”. Ariel is a postcard fiend’s haven, and hosts the biggest moleskin collection you’ll ever come across. But the real draw card is the front counter, spread with marbles from France, music trivia books, sparkly wrapping paper, colourful lanterns, retro posters, and even ‘scrabble’ themed mugs and tea towels. For foodies, an entire corner is devoted to chefs of the season. Best new product: the monolithic Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty or the bright pink “I fucking love you” photo album.
