Barangaroo is going to the dogs — in the best possible way — with the NSW Government launching a three-month trial allowing dogs to roam off-leash at Hickson Park.

The trial began on Friday 6 March and will run until Monday 8 June 2026, giving residents and visitors the chance to enjoy untethered play time with their dogs during designated hours. Under the trial, dogs can be off-leash at Hickson Park between 6–10am in the morning, then again from 4pm to 7:30pm. Outside those hours, dogs are still welcome in the park but must remain on a leash.

Located in the heart of Barangaroo, Hickson Park is a popular green space for locals, workers and visitors seeking a patch of open lawn along the harbour. The park features large grassy areas, native trees and public seating, providing a space for gatherings and passive recreation throughout the year.

The park also sits close to the growing residential precinct at Barangaroo Central and within walking distance of the heritage neighbourhood of Millers Point, making it a convenient option for apartment residents looking for nearby outdoor space.

Planning and Public Spaces Minister Paul Scully said the initiative reflects the increasing number of residents and pets living in the inner city.

“Delivering more homes in Barangaroo means we’ve also seen an increase in furry friends and apartment living means local parks like Hickson Park is the backyard for these dogs and the wider community.

“This off-leash trial will give residents and their dogs a place to find community, play and get rid of excess energy.”

The government says the trial is designed to balance the needs of dog owners with other park users. If the program proves successful, authorities will explore options for landscaping that could introduce natural barriers around the park without the need for fencing.

Independent Member for Sydney Alex Greenwich said off-leash areas are becoming increasingly important as companion animals play a larger role in urban life.

“Companion animals are increasingly becoming a part of the lives of of inner-city families and residents.

“Leash-free parks, like Hickson Park, bring dogs and the community together to enjoy open space in our great global city.”

Dog owners in the area also have another option nearby. Observatory Hill Park at Millers Point is already a designated off-leash area where dogs can socialise and play without being restrained.

The Hickson Park trial will run for three months, with outcomes expected to help inform future decisions about how inner-city parks can accommodate both pets and the wider community.
