Bangbang Cafe and Expresso Bar
Far from just another pocket of uber-cool in the designer Surry Hills area, internationally famous DJ Alan Thompson had actually created a cafe that I’d return to – for the food. Now if you just want to go because it’s cool, well, you won’t be disappointed either. Alan’s perhaps best known for his Ministry of Sound Housexy compilation; his staff are taut and tattooed in tight black t-shirts; the fit-out is cutting edge. Everyone dining wears expensive jeans. Many work in advertising. Don’t let that deter you from getting a taste of Alan’s homely UK favourites like Welsh Rarebit ($9.50) a classic dish where cheddar cheese, English mustard, Worcestershire sauce, flour and Guinness are grilled on Sonoma sourdough. The Scottish chef also does a great job with tatty scones on the Scottish Brekkie ($13.50) – trust me, they’re worth risking the black pudding for. In the drinks department there are stylish McLaughlin Milk bottles for (free) Sydney tap water, glam clear plungers for excellent Chamellia Organic Tea ($3.60) in flavours like Lemongrass and Ginger, and the coffee’s Campos. Need I say more? Even a demure looking Lemon Polenta Tea Cake ($4.50) is a big, bright, lemony surprise. The man knows more than tunes.
