Bandon Road is set for a major upgrade after the NSW Government committed an additional $250 million in the 2026-27 State Budget to the long awaited project in Sydney’s north west.
Bandon Road has been identified as a key transport corridor for some of the city’s fastest-growing suburbs.
The investment is aimed at easing congestion and improving access for communities expected to accommodate more than 300,000 additional residents in the coming years.
Bandon Road funding targets growing north west
The latest funding builds on the $75 million previously allocated for planning and early works, with construction on the first stage of the project expected to begin before the end of the year.
The initial 2.5 kilometre section will run from Windsor Road to Vineyard Station and includes a new four lane divided road, upgraded intersections, new connector roads and the removal of the level crossing at Vineyard Station. Plans also include improved pedestrian and cycling links, better public transport access and upgrades to flood evacuation routes.
The project is designed to improve travel for residents in Riverstone, Box Hill, Marsden Park and Vineyard, where rapid housing growth has placed increasing pressure on existing roads.
The broader vision is to deliver a 6.5 kilometre Bandon Road corridor linking Windsor Road with Richmond Road, providing an additional east west connection through Sydney’s north west and reducing the need for motorists to travel through Riverstone town centre.
The announcement continues the NSW Government’s focus on expanding transport infrastructure across Western Sydney as new housing developments continue to reshape the region.
Premier Chris Minns said the project was addressing infrastructure that had failed to keep pace with population growth.
“These roads were never built to accommodate the thousands of families who now call suburbs like Riverstone and Box Hill home” he said.
“Before the last election we said we’d put money aside for the necessary planning work to design the Bandon Road upgrade to make sure we provide the infrastructure these communities need” he continued.
“We’ve delivered on that promise, and today we’re getting on with the job of ensuring this significant project gets off the ground.”
Deputy Premier Prue Car said the investment would improve daily travel for local residents.
“This investment in Bandon Road is another example of the Minns Labor Government getting on with the job of fixing the infrastructure backlog left behind after years of poor planning and broken promises by the former Liberal National government” she said.
“For local families, this upgrade means less time commuting and more reliable trips to work, school and home.”
“After more than a decade of neglect from the Liberals, the Minns Labor Government is delivering the investment our community deserves – infrastructure that keeps pace with growth.”
Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison said the funding reflected the pace of growth in Sydney’s north west.
“Communities in Sydney’s North West are watching their neighbourhoods expand and change at an exponential rate, and with major new housing and employment development on the horizon, this region is only going to boom over the next decade.
“Growth of that scale doesn’t wait, and neither can our roads.
“We are investing $250 million in Bandon Road now, so this community has the infrastructure to match the growth already on its doorstep.
“The Minns Labor Government is focused on the future, delivering the infrastructure communities need today and for years to come.”
Riverstone MP Warren Kirby said the long-awaited project would make a significant difference for the region.
“It’s hard to overstate how important Bandon Road is to commuters in North West Sydney.
“The community has been waiting for this vital connection for over a decade, Bandon Road will have a huge positive impact for both the local area and throughout the region.
“Our community has experienced massive population growth without the necessary infrastructure needed. I’m proud to be part of the Minns Labor Government which is focused on funding road projects not simply promising them.”
