Balmain Town Hall Precinct set to undergo revitalization by council

The Balmain Town Hall Precinct is set to be revitalized after a community meeting was held last week to gather ideas for the space. The precinct projected to be upgraded spans from the Balmain PCYC to the Balmain Square, which includes the currently unused Balmain Court House.

Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne said that the precinct has been allocated $1.4 million to begin improvements, but says that “it will require more than that to make it happen”.

“We are bringing together local citizens, businesses, property owners, local and state agencies to breathe new life into this historic precinct” Cr Byrne said in a statement.

The Inner West Council held the public meeting to gather input from the community for ideas on the revitalisation. Some concepts included opening the Balmain Court House to the public, turning the Town Hall into an arts venue, and improving the Town Hall Library for children and families to use.

The idea of turning the precinct into a library was also fielded by a member of the community. Cr Byrne says feedback from the consultation meeting will be gathered into a document and circulated to those who attended.

The Inner West Council has also announced that the Balmain Library will be undergoing improvements as a “priority project”.

Cr Byrne says that council is planning to “bring the library up to contemporary design standards, refurbish the building and improve customer experience”.
