Article sparks speculation

When Peter King made a brief return into the public eye last month, speculation mounted that he was returning to the hustings.

The fact he was addressing the Waverley Historical Society on the topic “Australia: how free?” caused The Diary in the Sydney Morning Herald to excite readers with reports of “rare sightings” of the former federal MP.

But the good burghers of Bondi can attest that he is regularly seen around Bondi, especially at the Icebergs Club as a competitor at its Sunday winter swimming races.

The diarists noted as “far more intriguing his article in The Bondi View…” and then floated the possibility of Peter King’s return to politics for the Vaucluse state seat.

It’s hardly likely! For a start, it is not certain Peter Debnam will not stand again.

Peter King was a popular local MP and commanded respect beyond the normal Liberal constituency. If Vaucluse did fall vacant, he would be a popular choice among the locals.

The diarists surmised that King’s pennings indicated a planned comeback.

But King is back at the bar, busier than ever with a bagful of briefs ranging from appearances at the Australian High Court to corporate cases beyond our shores.

He is enjoying his work at the bar – and an enlarged circle of friends.
