A GoFundMe account has been created by NSW One Nation leader Mark Latham in order to fund the defamation suit he faces from Independent MP Alex Greenwich over his homophobic tweets.

The fundraiser was organised by the Latham Defence Fund, who are putting out the call to help fund Latham’s fight against Greenwich. At the time of writing, it has raised $9,390 of its $20,000 goal with the top donation at $1,000.

The campaign description outlines that “politics today has [gotten] very dirty.”

“Just look at the current attack on Mark Latham by Climate 200 (the billionaires who invest in China and rub out Australian jobs with Teal ‘independents’) and inner-city gay advocate Alex Greenwich,” it states.

“Mr Latham needs your support. He hasn’t got the billionaires of Climate 200 backing him. He’s always lived in Western Sydney and only owned one house at a time. He hasn’t got the money or assets to fight off the Left by himself.”

“Please help Mark Latham fight the Climate Change and Alphabet fanatics trying to break him financially. Any contribution you can make assists greatly, and all donations will go directly toward funding Mark Latham’s legal defence. It has been created by One Nation supporters.”

The Defamation Suit

Greenwich’s legal team had filed a defamation suit against Latham after he failed to apologise for his homophobic slurs against the Sydney MP in March 2023. The first case management hearing will occur on Friday 16th June.

The now-deleted tweet by Latham was in response to Greenwich who had condemned him over the attacks on peaceful LGBTQ+ protesters by a large mob outside the St Michael’s Church in Belfield. Latham was slated to give a speech there during the state election campaign.

After a police officer was left injured and three people were arrested, Greenwich had called Latham a “disgusting human being,” in response to an article that covered the incident.

Latham’s response was a graphic and homophobic tweet that City Hub chooses not to republish. Despite the backlash across the political spectrum and even his party’s own leader, Pauline Hanson calling on him to apologise, Latham has doubled down on his comments.

It’s been reported that Greenwich will be financially supported by Climate 200, whose creator Simon Holmes à Court has helped back environmentally progressive Independents (Teal) candidates in state and federal elections.

Greenwich will be represented by Dowson Turco Lawyers, Matt Collins AM KC and Sophie Jeliba and will be seeking maximum and aggravated damages against Latham.
