
Man Falls Five Storeys To His Death After Alleged Surry Hills Robbery

A man has fallen five storeys to his death while being pursued by police in Surry Hills after an alleged armed robbery.
Shortly after 8pm on Sunday, NSW Police responded to reports of a robbery at a grocery store at Devonshire Street, Surry Hills.
Officers from the Surry Hills Police Area Command were told a masked man had threatened a staff member with a knife before stealing cash and escaping with a woman.
A little over an hour later at 9:10pm, police entered a unit block on Belvoir Street when a man, believe to be the same man involved in the alleged armed robbery, ran from police towards a unit balcony, before jumping and falling five storeys.
“Police immediately treated the man before he was taken by NSW Ambulance paramedics to St Vincent’s Hospital where he later died,” a police spokesperson said.
The man is yet to be formally identified, although he is believed to be aged in his 40s.
21-year-old woman also arrested, appears in court today
During the incident, police also arrested a 21-year-old woman, who allegedly closed the unit door on officers after the man ran from police.
She was charged with robbery while armed with dangerous weapon, destroy or damage property less than $2,000, and hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty.
She was was refused bail and will appear in the Bail Division Local Court on Monday.
An independent review by the Professional Standards Command and oversight by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC) will be conducted.
The LECC is a permanent independent investigative commission that monitors and investigates officer misconduct and complaints against the NSW Police.
A crime scene was established and a critical incident team from Inner West Police Area Command is set to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
