Calls for Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek to listen to traditional owners, not fracking corporations
Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek is being urged to listen to traditional owners after the Northern Territory Government gave Tamboran the green light for 15 new fracking wells.
Earlier in June, independent organisation GetUp! installed a billboard outside the minister’s office, calling on her to use her powers to protect water from fracking.
Tamboran was fined last year for spraying hundreds of litres of toxic waste water. Whistle-blower contractors then revealed they were told to keep spraying contaminated drill rig water around a gas fracking site in the state’s Beetaloo Basin.
In response to City Hub inquiries, Plibersek said, “All projects must comply with national environment law, including the expanded water trigger introduced by the Albanese Government.”
In a joint statement, the Get Up! team said, “For over a decade, Traditional Owners have been fighting to protect water, Country, and the climate from fracking.”
“Listen to Traditional Owners, not gas corporations,” they urge the environment minister.
“Water is life in the NT and Tamboran‘s fracking plans will poison waterways with toxic chemicals.”
The organisation is now calling on concerned individuals to write to the environment minister using a submission form, and urge her to call in Tamboran’s fracking plans for an assessment on the impacts of water.
