A 10m wide sinkhole has emerged in Burwood, leaving some residents without water for a significant time.

The sinkhole appeared on Wednesday September 28 after two water pipes burst under the road. Sydney Water say that initial reports suggest the pipe breakages led to the road being pushed up, forming the sinkhole.

Police and emergency services set up an exclusion zone around the sink hole, and blocked access to Lucas Road, in case the sinkhole expanded.

Investigations into the cause of the sinkhole are on-going. Specialist firefighters were sent to a water drainage outlook to look into the cause of the road damage.

The sinkhole is located above the WestConnex tunnel, with the M4 running underneath.

Residents supplied with temporary water fix

Residents on Lucas Street and surrounds have been left without water as the sinkhole has effected water supplies in the area. Nine News reported that 75 residents were told water supply would be switched back on yesterday morning.

Sydney Water crew were on site yesterday, and temporary water supplies were restored to affected residents.

“Crews will continue to work through the night to safely complete these complex repairs, with restoration activities expected to continue for a number of days at the break site” Sydney Water said.

They also apologised to any customers affected by the water outages.

The M4 tunnel has remained open throughout the incident.
